Understanding Specific Learning Disorders
Specific learning disorders are neurodevelopmental conditions involving persistent difficulties learning and using particular academic skills, despite access to appropriate teaching and opportunities to learn.
Difficulties with accurate or fluent reading, recognising words, decoding or understanding written information. This may be associated with dyslexia.
Difficulties with spelling, grammar, handwriting, organising written work or expressing ideas clearly in writing.
Difficulties understanding numbers, recalling mathematical facts or completing calculations. This may be associated with dyscalculia.
A child may experience difficulties in one area or across several academic skills.

Individual signs do not confirm a specific learning disorder and may have other educational, developmental or emotional explanations.
Learning Across Everyday School Life
A specific learning disorder can affect classroom participation, homework, examinations and confidence at school.
A child may understand the lesson but find it difficult to demonstrate their knowledge through reading, writing or mathematics. Tasks may take longer to complete and require more concentration, which can lead to tiredness, frustration or avoidance. These difficulties should not be interpreted as a lack of intelligence, effort or motivation.
